Then, with 10 days of flat water, along with the number of tournaments & derbies held and the pressure of a lot of fishing boats within a 10 mile x 1 mile stretch, the fish diminished their desire to bite. I for one am glad for some consistent winter weather to at least reset seasonal conditions after the mild fall. Hike some different water spots on the smaller tribs and you should find some brown trout action with a steelhead or two thrown in. A fair number of Kings are loitering in downstream areas on the Oak with skein drifters still into them up at least until yesterday. Water temps have remained downright cool late into this season despite up and down flows. Thru the past weekend we heard of guys getting steelhead hookups nearer the dam including a few good fish. Keep informed from the NYS Canal web for changes and restrictions with canal waters. There are now very small spurts of kings coming through. But the gloom and the cool definitely conducive for fish migrations, guys remarking that fish were migrating yesterday. Flies and egg imaginations have been the best baits for the salmon. Shouldnt be any serious icing in yet but there could be some bank ice or chunky flows. So, we moved out to 250-300 FOW and things got better. A weak cold front coming through today will change water tempshopefully creating a better bite. And really you may not want to give up completely on salmon efforts just yet. Any significant precipitation could raise all the trib flows back high and dirty. Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. Forecast is for precipitation again Wednesday and a chance of showers thru the end of the week. Lots of young browns bodes well for future trib fish and this bigger rutted out fish begs the question where were you last fall?! King salmon with browns inside of 100 kings and steelhead out to 500 the bite is good. Early season Oak rivermouth action for a nice brace of med female Kings for the Licorice Man. Check the Canal schedule for duration. There were bottled up Kings at the mouth of Johnson Creek that now should be spread up thru the waterway. No big concentration of fish in any one spot that we know of, except for the stranded for now overflow fish. The charter fleet has had king salmon action in 100-120 FOW using chrome glow flasher fly combinations down to 60 ft. All the waterways are wide open to fish with no icing to worry about for now. Ive heard from visiting Rec boats (AKA recreational) that west of the Point in 100-200 ft of water got em steelhead and coho salmon action. Hair jigs and worm harnesses fished off 3-way rigs is the way to go. That being said, the fish holding thermocline is yoyoing between 30 to over 100 down. Albion, NY 14411 Sandy Creek is probably remaining stubbornly stained from that Canal drainage but definitely dropping back some. Early silver fish like this are a good sign for the upcoming trib action. Flows in the other tribs bracketing east and west look like they are back up some. Plenty of water cover in the Oak for a few fresh brown trout or getting toward more post spawn fish. We are catching fish in 50-110 water in front of the major rivers and off 9-mile point. For now flows in the Oak are moderate or optimistically almost medium and mostly clear. You can feel the Spring change in the weather now and with ice cover going away on Lake Alice, there will be the typical warming of water temps in the Oak. Weather is seasonal for now with highs in the 30sF and dropping back at night forecast thru the mid week. Long range forecast looks more or less winter-like thru next week and so this may be the settling in of winter conditions that could last for more than a couple days. Cool if not coldish temps forecast thru this week with rain showers. Anglers are toughing it out for a few bites daily on browns or steelhead. The fishing this last week has been better than the previous couple weeks. So far a nice start to the action, forecast looking mostly dry and seasonably cool right thru the upcoming weekend. Any significant precipitation will quickly raise all the trib flows up again with the chance for off color flows. Flows in the Oak down just a touch, maybe some of that love from Canal water being shared with Johnson Creek is responsible for that. Think something like flows going from low to not so low. Hours are 7 am till 5pm. As a few post holiday reports come in it sounds like guys have had some better steelhead action. Good action reported, consistent from most anglers on the Oak thru the past end of weekend and yesterday. Im just returning from the Fly Fishing Show in Edison, NJ so will need to come back up to speed on fishing info as some angler reports come in. Im not hearing a lot from the other area smaller waterways but you can bet patient anglers could find some drop back action or a few fresh browns or steelhead in the lower reaches. Their Catch of Kings ranged from 16 to 22 lbs. After several days of strong west winds both charter and Rec boats got back out. There would have been a similar few day high/stained fishable water window in the smaller area tribs too. Fishing pressure is light to moderate with what looks like a few guys here and there probably enjoying holiday time off. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Anglers might consider re-releasing those fish in the turbine channel. We encourage you to do the same with Brookfield, NYSDEC and/or Orleans County Tourism. Here in the Oak Orchard neighborhood theres something like 18+ inches of a medium dense snow so therell be a good supply of runoff flows when it melts. Everything is wide open to fish and its going to take a cold snap to get things iced back up again. Definitely on the moderate side of medium and not on the slightly high side of medium. Other area smaller tribs are dropping back toward low and clear and warming thru this week. Flows consist of lots of turbine water and overflow water that started to come back up for the end of the past weekend. Through the past weekend and beginning part of this week, guys reported a few hook-ups by either working the holes, the dam, or swinging spawning staging spots. Other area smaller tribs like Johnson and Marsh have lower flows so look for scattered numbers of upstream fish. On the backside now of higher flows from about a week ago something like med to slightly high flows in the Oak and med in the smaller area waterways. A PFD is not required to fish all of the Oak, only on the Brookfield Power Company areas below the dam (about 600 feet) where wading is permitted. Fresh silver browns too and chance for bonus steelhead or salmon. Not sure if we are even going to see the typical influx of trout guys those crowds are already tardy not unlike the trout and salmon migrations. There was some water level fluctuations yesterday thanks to hydropower operations and when the water was down briefly a fair amount of fish were seen in the upstream areas. Any big steelhead this time of the year in relatively warm water are going to be a challenge to land! More then not, fish are still in good green shape. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. Peach of a day today and it looks like guys are more seriously getting out there this week. Flows yesterday in the AM were down but did rebound nicely to the mod or almost med flows weve had this season. The other area smaller waterways trending slowly falling flows at around mod and slightly stained. Or for the fall stay at our new well appointed private ground floor lodge (Garage Lodge) located just 6 miles east on Route 18. The other area smaller tribs have a fair amount of icing. We had report of the first salmon of the season about two weeks ago. They fished way off shore on the Pirate Queen with Captain Tom Wolfe. The full moon that was maybe responsible for the uptick in migrations just recently is now on the wane. The other area smaller tribs have med to slightly high flows with slightly stained water color. Please use the Oak Orchard State Boat Launch on Archbald Rd. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?! Flows in the other area smaller tribs are low and mostly clear with some icy conditions. The season ends November 30th with a catch and release from December 1st till June. With fair to good bolstered flows from the Erie Canal guys are reporting good brown trout action with a green King here and there and/or a sporty colorful coho. Look for fish to be well spread upstream thru all the waterways with anglers wise to spread out too and try different spots to find fish. No doubt well have concentrations of Kings into November. An honest notch or so less (slightly high) then the previous wide open turbine flows with overflow levels diminished. The lower flows will concentrate the available fish in a few good lies or gravel spots. Savvy trib anglers anticipate good hook-up chances on the backside of high flows when reasonable weather and water conditions coincide! There was some action reported downstream off of Park Ave too yesterday. Flows in the other area smaller tribs should be around med and slightly stained. See ya out there! Suspect some pressure has shifted to other area smaller waterways.
